Creating handcrafted jewellery in her studio in Dundas, Ontario, Rachel Dykstra works primarily with precious metals and cabochons. With a background in hairdressing, shape, colour and texture have always had a huge impact on her designs and creative choices. One of her favourite techniques is called Reticulation; a process where sterling silver and controlled heat are used to create craters and ridges on the metal.
“Experimentation with texture, colour and patinas have inspired my multi-dimensional pieces. It is through this creative process that mysterious shapes and asymmetrical designs emerge. These shapes draw upon everyday life and nature, such as rocks and bark, and reflect its spontaneity in the lines and shapes of how objects fit together. With a medley of angles, shapes, and textures coming together to establish cross-sections of design. My pieces are created to remain fresh and interesting, not only for the wearer, but also the observer.”
